Shin Shinchokoki episode 03

Episode 3: It is inevitable

Ieyasu starts instilling fear in the students of Ginnan High. His aim is to rule the school by fear. The flag battle this episode is between Ieyasu and Akechi Mitsuhide.

Akechi is famous for being the vassal of Nobunaga who killed him in the Honnoji incident. It’s one of the most important events in Japan history, and this episode is like the Honnoji incident repeating itself.

While the school is stunned in fear by Ieyasu, Nobunaga finally realizes something…

Translation notes

  • Nakanu nara, koroshiteshimae hototogisu (If it doesn’t sing, kill it) is one of Nobunaga’s famous quote. 3 great lords of the Warring States period in Japan (Nobunaga, Hideyoshi and Ieyasu) had different takes about the “cuckoo doesn’t sing” condition that represent their nature and personality. My two cents – beware spoilers

Honestly, I had quite an expectation in this episode. Miyabi’s fortune-telling, the truth behind Ieyasu’s true nature, the battle between Ieyasu and Akechi… these scenes are some of my favorites in the manga. I was looking forward to the scenes so much, only to find out they emit most of the important parts 😅

Some scenes seem too forced, there are too many loose ends that seem to be tied in a lazy way. I mean what’s with the sudden appearance of the professor’s son? That’s too random and too many questionable facts. I also seriously think Miyabi’s friends serve no purpose at all and they can be removed from the drama. They also could have done better in portraying the growth and change in Nobunaga’s character, so that he doesn’t look like a random guy with a little importance. The Nobunaga in the manga is very charming, and I think Nagase portrays him very well, but it’s the script that’s lacking? Give me back my Nobunaga 😫

A few things I like about this episode though, are the part where Ieyasu makes his speech in the school yard, where Nobunaga has a talk with Akechi and when Nobunaga gets angry when he sees Miyabi hurt that finally leads him to find his purpose. I think these scenes are well written and shot very nicely.

So Nobunaga has finally made a move, and I can’t wait to see how the story develops in upcoming episodes.

  1. Hello! First of all, thank you so much for subbing this drama. I had great hype and so far I’m not disappointed at all, quite the contrary, I’m really enjoying it fully. Thank you also for all the notes which are very precious.
I might have been more hooked up to episode 1&2 rather than the third one, but I have to say that I loved how the “betrayal” concept was developed throughout the whole episode. I enjoyed it a lot.
    Thank you really!
(Also, Hideyoshi’s kansaiben kills me all the time, the nandeyanen scream he blurts out here was definitely precious X3)

    1. Hi, thank you very much for your comment! It’s very delighting to know that there are other people enjoying this drama!
I think this drama gets more and more interesting each episode, so it’s kind of sad to see people dropping it only from watching the first 1-2 episodes 😦
