Translation notes

  • Shiba Toshogu Shrine is located in the Minato ward of Tokyo, Japan. It is characterized by enshrining the first shōgun of the Tokugawa Shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu. Shiba Toshogu is notable for its giant ginkgo tree, one of the biggest in Tokyo, with a height of 21.5 m (71 ft) and a trunk circumference of 6.5 m (21 ft). It is believed that Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Tokugawa shōgun, planted the tree himself, when the Tōshō-gū shrine was rebuilt in 1641. (Source)

Famous “mon” of Samurai Warlords in Japan
  • Tanko Bushi (炭坑節) is a Japanese folk song. It is a song about coal mining, and it refers to old Miike Mine in Kyushu (Tagawa City). It is a common song used in Bon dances during the Bon Festival, and the dance that accompanies it depicts actions in mines such as shoveling coal, throwing a bag of coal over the shoulders, wiping sweat from the brow or pushing a cart of coal. • Exchanging a cup of water (水杯/水盃を交わす; mizusakazuki wo kawasu): To drink water instead of sake with sake cup. It is done at the time of parting, when it is uncertain whether or not they will see each other again. To go off to battle after exchanging a cup of water. (After learning about the meaning of this, I get more emotional watching their last banquet again 🥺)

My final impression about this drama – BEWARE SPOILERS!!

Until the final episode, I still think this drama is a genre of its own. An online news site categorizes it into historical SF, and I think it’s probably the closest genre. But I feel the drama itself is more about humanity, friendship, forgiveness, change, growth, and lessons in life. It’s a very wonderful and warm drama, that plays with my emotion in every episode.

I miss these dorks 😭 Looking at the class photo that they posted in early stages of the drama makes me miss them already.

I’m also very much satisfied with the ending. Although there are many loopholes in the story, but once I stop trying to be overly critical about each detail, I enjoyed it so much and I think it’s wonderfully wrapped up. I’m kind of puzzled that they made the clones stay in Ginnan for 8 years, but thinking about it again, they’re probably waiting for Miyabi to save them, and to see her again in the place they first met? Or who knows, probably Miyabi promised them that she would come back to Ginnan as a teacher?

If there’s anything I’m wanting for more, it’s what happens during those 7 years! I’m dying to know! Did they ever go on the school trip? Did Ii finally buy matching wooden swords with Nobunaga? I love it that they recall some lines from the first episode.

Episode 1 vs Final episode

Let’s also forget that there’s the appearance of history version of Nobunaga. I can’t help cracking so hard at his look, I know it’s supposed to be an important scene, but they could’ve done better in dressing him up, please 😂

But what I love the most is how they stay silly until the very last scene. It’s like the casts have totally turned into themselves and just improvised things like they please. It feels very homey and warm! Ieyasu is making yubi-heart sign! And Nobunaga is still eating dried persimmon even until 7 years later 😂 I love how absurd they are!

I’m so going to miss being called utsuke by Nobunaga! Happy I can still hear it one last time!

I really enjoyed subbing this drama for the past 2.5 months. Otsukaresama, the advanced class, it makes me sentimental learning that all of them cranked up at the same scene 😢 Shin Shinchokoki team is the best!

PS: Did you pay attention to the whiteboard in the last scene? It’s said that the casts wrote the messages there themselves. Each message is full of characteristics and it shows how fun the off cam vibe is. I can really feel their love for this drama, though 🥰

  1. Thank you so much for subbing this drama! This is the first one in awhile that I watched weekly. At first it was such an odd premise I wondered why I was watching. But it was sweet and entertaining, and I was hooked. Thank you!
